How to rank on Google Maps in the Florida Keys

What the map pack rewards, and what you can actually control.

The "map pack" is the block of three businesses with a map that appears at the top of a local search. For most local businesses it gets more clicks than everything below it combined. Here is how it is decided, and what you can do about it.

Google weighs three things

Google has been fairly open about this: local ranking comes down to relevance, distance, and prominence. You cannot change distance — where the searcher is standing is where they are standing. The other two are entirely within your control.

Relevance: does your profile match the search?

Relevance is how well your business matches what was typed. Choose the most specific primary category that fits, then add secondary categories. List your individual services with real descriptions. If you do web design, "Website designer" needs to be on your profile — Google is not going to infer it.

Prominence: how well known and well regarded are you?

Prominence comes from reviews, from being mentioned consistently across the web, and from your website's own authority. This is the slowest of the three to build and the hardest for a competitor to copy.

The practical checklist

Complete every single field on your profile

Profiles that are 100% complete outrank profiles that are 80% complete. Hours, holiday hours, service area, attributes, photos, a full description, and every service listed with its own description. It is tedious and it works.

Set your service area properly

If you travel to customers rather than having a storefront, set yourself up as a service-area business and list the towns you actually serve: Key West, Marathon, Islamorada, Key Largo. Do not list the whole state. Overreaching dilutes your relevance for the places you genuinely serve.

Get reviews steadily, not in bursts

A steady trickle of reviews looks natural and keeps working. Twenty reviews in one week after two silent years looks like what it is. Ask every satisfied customer with a direct link, and reply to every review you receive.

Post to your profile

Google Business Posts are underused by small businesses, which is exactly why they are worth doing. One short post a week — an offer, a tip, a recent job — signals an active business.

Keep your name, address, and phone identical everywhere

Every directory, every social profile, your own website footer. Inconsistency makes Google less confident it knows who you are, and confidence is what prominence is built on.

How long does it take?

Profile completeness and category fixes can move things within a few weeks. Review volume and prominence take months. Anyone promising you the top spot in thirty days is selling something. The businesses that win the map pack are the ones that keep at it after the initial enthusiasm wears off.
